According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 1 in 36 8 year old children are identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). (2020) This estimate comes from the CDC's Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network. The prevalence of ASD is reported to occur in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups, and it is nearly 4 times more common among boys than among girls.

Carla Heiser, MS, LDN, FAAMFM, ABAAHP, co-Principal Investigator, specializes in integrating advanced medical nutrition strategies to optimize health outcomes. Her focus is on applied biochemistry to develop patient-centered nutritional programs. Carla excels in connecting, collaborating, and leading teams through her commitment to strategic alignment, ethical leadership, and impact-driven execution.

Lori Varas, BS, CFMC, co-Investigator and leader of the Precise Health Solutions Clinicians, advocates for science-based food and nutrition strategies that significantly improve outcomes for individuals with Autism. With a background in chemistry, environmental contamination, and health education, Lori's team addresses the root causes of symptoms and diseases to restore health balance.

Collaborating with Purdue University, Dr. Anita Panjwani, co-Principal Investigator, brings her expertise in bench science, human nutrition, and public health research to the team. She focuses on enhancing health spans by addressing the accessibility and appeal of nutrient-rich foods. Her research includes studying the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory phytochemicals in preventing and treating chronic diseases and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Together, the team's research aims to improve individuals' health spans by tackling issues related to access to and the palatability of nutritious and therapeutic foods. We believe that a clean eating strategy combined with sustainable practices—rather than a restrictive "diet" approach—provides sustainable solutions that can be implemented in low-resource settings, ultimately benefiting those in greatest need.Carla Heiser, MS LDN FAAMFM ABAAHP, co-PI specializes in blending advanced Carla Heiser, MS, LDN, FAAMFM, ABAAHP, co-Principal Investigator, specializes in integrating advanced medical nutrition strategies to optimize health outcomes. Lori Varas, BS CFMC, co-I leading the Precise Health Solutions Clinicians,  supports science-driven food and nutrition approaches that significantly impact Autism outcomes. Together with Purdue University and Dr. Anita Panjwani

Dr. Anita Panjwani, co PI, with bench science and expertise in human nutrition and public health research, focuses on improving health spans by addressing access to and palatability of nutrient-rich foods. Her work includes studying the efficacy of anti-inflammatory phytochemicals for preventing and treating chronic diseases and neuropsychiatric disorders.

The team's research goals are to improve individuals' health spans by addressing issues of access to and palatability of nutrient-rich and therapeutic foods. We believe a clean eating plan with strategic sustainable practices versus a "diet don't approach" offers sustainable solutions that are translatable in low-resource settings, reaching those in most need.

    Testimonial from a PEARL PARTNER

Since  participating in the functional (feasibility) nutritional study (PEARL), Gabor, our 14 year old son on the autism spectrum, has  experienced significant improvements in both his health and overall  behaviors.  Initially, we made the shift to an organic  diet, and almost immediately we noticed a boost in his focus and a  reduction in certain behavioral challenges. The shift to an organic  diet, followed by the dietary adjustments based on the FiT results —  particularly eliminating gluten and dairy — has made a noticeable  difference in his health  and behavioral issues. Gabor himself has  reported feeling better physically, particularly noting a reduction in  his chronic runny nose, which had been a persistent issue for him prior  to the dietary adjustments.

These adjustments have not only helped  alleviate this issue but have also contributed to a marked increase in  his focus and behavior, both of which are now much more stable. These  positive changes reflect the direct impact of the new nutrition plan,  and Gabor is excited to continue this journey toward better health. It  has been truly rewarding to witness his progress and the positive impact  of personalized nutrition on both his physical and cognitive  well-being.

I  would like to extend my sincere thanks to PEARL and the Purdue staff  for their dedication and support over the course of the past 12 weeks.  The information shared and the guidance provided throughout this study  have been incredibly insightful and meaningful. I truly appreciate the  time and effort invested in making this experience so enriching.
